What to Pack For Cuba: 5 Essential Things You Need

Cuba is unlike any other Caribbean vacation and there are many features of this beautiful island that makes it truly a unique vacation experience. Known for its lush green forests, breathtaking beaches, historic Havana streets and crystal clear blue waters, a visit to Cuba will soon become a regular pastime.

#2: Bring a variety of clothing. Those traveling to Cuba usually bring a variety of dress if they plan on going to more formal establishments or if they are staying in upscale resorts. Most restaurants and resorts are air-conditioned, but it is always smart to have a range of light clothing for all events. Bring items such as sundresses, light short-sleeved shirts, formal shorts, casual shorts, swimsuits, wraps and maybe a pair of light dress pants for men.

#3: Passport and other documents. It obvious that you always need to bring identification such as a passport and tourist card. The tourist card is provided by the airline you are traveling with a secures your entry to the island destination and your exit. (FYI: If you don't know already, there is a travel ban in effect and Americans are not allowed to enter Cuba either direct or via another country.)

#4: Bring cash along with you and then convert it into Cuban Convertible Pesos when you get to the airport in Cuba or at your hotel. If your hotel does not have the Cuban Convertible Pesos available, then you might have to find a nearby bank in a nearby town. Ask your hotel for the best approach to converting Canadian dollars.

#5: Donations and gifts for locals, hotel staff and more. Many people tip with gifts at specific hotels and resorts. A gift from Canada that is hard to get in Cuba would be soaps, bath products, Aspirin, school supplies, razors (men and women) notepads, stationary, baby clothes, childrens clothing and more.

2) Make sure you reserve your seats on the plane as soon as possible. if you are the type of person who needs to get up and stretch during the flight, and if you want an aisle seat, book it in advance. Seats go fast and the last thing you want is to be trapped in a window seat. If you require extra leg room, then try and book an emergency seat.

3) When you buy your plane ticket, make sure you log in the correct information. For example, if your name is Charles Smith, don't put Chuck Smith. Put the exact name on your ticket booking as you have on your personal identification. This will reduce the chances of any problems occurring when boarding your flight at the airport.

4) Be on time. If your flight requires you to be at the airport 2 or 3 hours before liftoff, be there. It is always a smart idea to be at the airport and waiting rather than racing last minute to catch your flight. Stop causing yourself any extra travel stress and give yourself enough time.

5) Purchase travel insurance before you go. If you want to protect yourself from flight cancellations, major medical expenses and baggage loss, make sure you buy travel insurance that covers all of these specific problems.

6) When in flight drink a lot of water. Avoid alcoholic drinks as they can dehydrate you and make you feel bloated. Water is the right way to go when flying to your dream destination.

Asking for time off from work is one of the top nerve-wracking occurances at work, next to being fired or asking for a much-deserved raise. If you have been wanting to ask your boss for that much needed time off so you can book a vacation this year, it is important to consider a few things before popping the 'vacation time' question.

If you fear your boss (which doesn't usually occur in this day and age as the workplace environment isn't run by fear) and have so much anxiety about sitting down and talking with him or her about the time you want off, consider these 5 tips on how to ask your boss for vacation time off.

Everyone deserves a vacation from time to time and your boss will surely take their time off and then some, so why not you? Here are 5 tips to consider before making that dreaded walk towards your bosses office and before asking for time off from work.

#1: Plan in Advance

If you really want to go away during the year, it is best to start planning in January or February (latest April) so that you can reserve your time off before everyone in the office starts making their plans. Imagine attempting to ask your boss for a week or two off in the summer only to discover that everyone else in the office has already put their requests in for Summer time off. You will be out of luck as someone needs to stay back and hold the show!

#2: Offer to Be Available

Even though it is your vacation time off, you can still offer to stay in touch about certain projects or senstive matters during your time away from the office. While you shouldn't be attached to a computer or phone during your vacation, you can check in from time to time and see if there is anything that needs immediate attention. Basically, it is a good idea to offer to be in touch. Nowadays, in most modern offices and companies, your boss will most likely say to forget about it and enjoy your time away. (If you work in a healthy work environment that is!)

#3: Make Your Travel Plans Known

If you get the go ahead with the boss that you can have the time off and as soon as you know your trip is booked and in place, tell your co-workers. Some employees have thought that keeping their travel plans on the 'down low' was a smart idea and then returned to some very angry and upset colleagues who had to struggle with their extra duties because they weren't given time to prepare. Just because your boss knows you have the week off doesn't mean that everyone in the office will know. Share your travel plans with your colleagues and give them time to prepare for your abscence.

#4: Be Cool About It, Be Sensitive to Other Co-Workers

Even though you may be busting at the seams with excitement about your upcoming trip, be sensitive to those you are leaving behind. Avoid coming into the office in a Hawaiian shirt, bragging about the crystal-blue ocean in your soon-to-be destination adventure and singing Bob Marley's greatest hits. No one likes a bragger!

#5: If You Don't Ask, You Will Never Get

If you keep attempting to ask your boss, then ultimately crawl back to your desk, get it together. Your boss may be your superior in the workplace when it comes to direction and command, but he or she is just as human as you and also has to report to someone higher than themselves. Remember that they can also appreciate how nerve-wracking asking for time off can be and you just might be surprised with how fast they approve your vacation time. Be prepared and be aware. Consider these top 5 safety travel tips when flying with children.

#1: Be ready for all type of travel blips and emergencies. Get to know the emergency equipment on your flight. Read the in-flight safety brochure even if you have twenty zillion times before. Refresh your memory. Listen to the in-flight crew when they are doing their safety briefing and make sure you check with the flight crew to see if they have small life presevers for younger children. Make sure the in-flight crew have knowledge of any medical conditions your child may have so they are prepared in the event of any occurances.

#2: Bring all necessary items on the flight and to the hotel that your small child may require. This can be anything from lotions and baby wipes, to medications and toys to keep them entertained.

If you are planning a family vacation this year, you might want to go over a few in-flight strategies with your kids and more importantly your teenagers. A long haul flight can be difficult for a child or teenager if they don't understand or know what the proper flight etiquette is.

Give your kids the travel skills and tools so that they (and you!) can travel with ease and without any unnecessary anxiety. Here are some family travel tips with a strong focus on our beloved teens.

Do a Luggage Scan, Avoid Suspicion

Your teenager is old enough to pack their own bag, but it is still important to scan over their luggage before flying the open skies. Check the contents to make sure they don’t pack anything that may arouse suspicion upon airport check in and make sure they aren't taking anything onboard that is valuable and cannot be replaced.

Keep in mind that some zealous teenagers tend to pack a month's worth of clothes even though they are just going away for a week. Prevent your teen from packing a bag that is bursting at the seams and devise a checklist together that states exactly how many pieces of clothing they will need while traveling. To avoid problems with the weight of the bag at the airport it is a good idea to check the weight at home on a scale so you can speed through security and avoid any travel blips.

Chargers and Batteries Are An Absolute Must-Have

The last thing you want is a whiny teenager on a long flight, so make sure they have their music players or gaming systems to keep them busy. Make sure the in-flight crew gives the approval of any technical gadgets and devices your teens uses and remind them to turn them off when the in-flight crew or pilot dictates. Charge all the electronic devices before you head off on your journey as you do not want your teen's games to die in the middle of the flight, causing you as their devoted guardian to endure endless whining until you land. If your teen is bringing a portable DVD player be sure to pack extra batteries and lots of movies. If all else fails, have a plan 'B' and bring them a book to read.

Trail Mix Can Be A Life Saver

The meals onboard can satisfy hunger pangs, but it definitely won’t keep your teen satisfied for long. Pack some healthy snacks for your teen(s) such as trail mix, granola, goldfish crackers, fruit slices and (on the junk food side) their favourite chips or some candy to keep them happy while flying 35,000 feet above. Let's face it, some teens are in the process of developing their taste buds for specific foods and they may be somewhat picky when it comes to airplane food. Skip the moans and groans and bring along some light snacks to keep them energized. Note to parent/guardian: Do NOT pack foods that will make a big mess if accidentally spilled.

Flight Etiquette is Key

Your teenager probably knows most of the rules of flying, but it wouldn’t hurt to give them the run down once again. 'No seat kicking' is a #1 flight rule. Let your teen know beforehand that if they are listening to music they should have it at a respectful level as some people may be trying to catch a few Z’s. If they decide to eat a snack, make sure they don’t start chewing in an obnoxious manner, therefore, annoying all of the other passengers.

Picture this: You are running through the terminal, a glaze of sweat on your brow, your heart is beating faster than a speeding bullet and you are desperate to make it in time before they close the gates on your connecting flight.

It can be extremely stressful and nerve-racking when you are trying to make it on time for your flight, but life does get in the way and obstacles do happen. Travel is unpredictable and it is always better to be early than racing for time. What do you do if you actually miss your flight? Here are 5 tips on what to do if you miss your flight.

#1: If you were just on a flight and it was delayed and then you missed your connecting flight, you have more of a chance of getting on another flight quicker than others. If it is with the same airline company then the ticket agents should not charge you a change fee and you should be boarding the next departing flight.

#2: Don't start taking it out on the ticketing agent and blaming them for the missed flight scenario. Talk to them in a calm manner and ask them about your options. The more annoyed and frantic you get the more you will be held up in your travel plans. Stay calm and find an option for you. Hopefully one that does not cost you extras fees. If it was your fault that you missed the flight, own up to it and work it out.

#3: If you missed your flight due to having a few drinks with your best buddies that are seeing you off, you must take responsibility. Remember that an airline has the right to deny intoxicated passengers and if you miss your flight because of a few too many, then be nice to the airline staff, tell them you will behave and hopefully they will allow you aboard.
