People and Culture: These islands were settled by land owners and the labourers they brought in to improve the coconut stands. There is a community of Malay people who trace their ancestry to east Africa, China, Java, Borneo and Malacca. The Muslim faith is followed here. English is quite commonly spoken. In 1984 the people of Cocos integrated with Australia to become a territory.
A resident or national of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is called "Cocos Islander". The Term used to describe things from here is "Cocos Islander". For example, "Cocos Islander food".
Food: The cuisine of the islands incorporates the abundant local seafood and tropical fruit. Restaurants on Home Island serve Malay fare while those on the West Island are more Australian. Although both Malay and Australian cuisines are conglomerations of Asian, African, Indonesian and European traditions.
Islamic practices and beliefs are closely adhered to in this country’s customs, laws, and regulations. Common sense and discretion should be exercised. Visitors should dress conservatively when and where appropriate (e.g. women should not wear tight or revealing clothing or short skirts, and both men and women should refrain from wearing shorts). Respect religious and social traditions to avoid offending local sensitivities especially when visiting holy places and mosques. During the lunar month of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Muslim calendar), Muslims refrain from drinking, eating, and smoking between sunrise and sunset.
