People and Culture: The Samoans are deeply religious. Sunday is respected as the day of rest. The matai (chief) of the village is highly respected and the extended family is an important part of day to day life. Most Samoans live in the villages in open fales(thatched open-sided erections). Traditional cooking is done in umu (open pits). The traditional art of tattooing is evident in the ornate designs on young male Samoans. Samoan is their mother tongue, but English is widely spoken.

Food: International cuisine is served at most restaurants. Traditional Samoan feasts are held at some of the hotels on the weekends and include chicken, pork and seafood as well as tropical fruits and coconuts. Kava is a traditional drink served on the island. It is advisable to drink boiled or bottled water.
