Same Voltage: If the voltage is the same as yours at home, all you might need is a plug adaptor.

Converting Up: A converter is needed if you want to adapt 120V appliances up to a 220V line. You will need a 50-watt converter for small, non-heating appliances (like a tape player or shaver) and a 1600-watt converter for things like blow dryers or curling irons.

Converting Down: On the other hand, a transformer is needed for 220V appliances plugging in to a 120V line.

Converting Up and Down: A "top of the line" transformer is dual-purpose. It is able to adapt up to 220V or down to 120V.
