Brunei in South-East Asia is a wealthy tropical paradise just north of the Equator on the northern coast of an island it shares with Borneo. Its fortunate people, made rich by oil deposits, live in a tropical, river-riddled landscape, those in the capital in modern buildings, those in the country in a variety of dwellings including stilt-houses. With no need of tourist dollars, it is unspoiled by development-which of course makes it all the more attractive. A Muslim sultanate, Brunei can treat its people well, and they enjoy many of the advantages they would in an ideal socialist country-free education, recreational centres and health care-and many that capitalist societies only dream of-high, untaxed wages and low rates on loans. |
