Eritrea lies along the south-western coast of the Red Sea. The coastal regions are low-lying and humid, with the interior mountainous. Eritreans speak a variety of African dialects, with the main languages being Arabic and Tigrinya. Many people in centres of population also speak Italian and English. Most people farm the land, producing various grain crops, but they are not able to alleviate the stunning poverty that besets the nation. However, multinational companies are now exploring the possibility of offshore oil; Eritrea may one day soon be a great deal wealthier!
