Tropical beaches, African coral reefs, plantations of YlangYlang, cassis and vanilla and crumbling Palaces of Sultans. The Comores is as exotic an island destination as it gets. In a world of beautiful beaches, these islands have some of the best. The cities are an exciting, jumbled, decaying mix of Muslim, African and Roman Catholic cultures. Just as exciting is the politics, the Comores have earned the nickname "coup-coup land" for the regular local insurrections and power-grabs. Comores changed their official country name from the Islamic Republic of the Comoros to the Union of the Comoros after their latest political change in 2002. Mayotte is an island near the Comoros archipelago but remains the territory of France. Mayotte has the best diving and coral reefs of the area.
