Called the Roof of the World, the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, buried deep in South Africa sits at the heights of the Drakensberg escarpment on the eastern rim of the South African plateau. Snow-capped peaks, green valleys and startling ravines give towards the west onto foothills and a lowland belt along the border, where most of the population lives. The peoples of the region came together in the first few decades of the nineteenth century at the stronghold of Butha-Butha and then on the mountain of Thaba-Bosiu, about 30km (20 miles) from what is now Maseru, under the leadership of Moshoeshoe the Great. The heritage of these mainly Sesotho-speaking people are Nguni, San, Griqua, Indian and European, with English the official language. Most are Christian, with some Muslim and other religions also practiced, and very important to the people. Lesotho got its independence from the UK in 1966, but, as the 1983 border closure by South Africa shows, it is not entirely free of external political pressure.
