Macedonia

This small, landlocked country is tucked away in South-eastern Europe between Albania, Serbia and Montenegro, Bulgaria and Greece. Macedonia gained independence in 1991 and its recent history has been ravaged by political, territorial and ethnic tensions. Civilization in this region dates back many centuries BC and includes leaders such as Alexander the Great. Their history of Christianity is revealed in the many monasteries and churches within their borders. Macedonia boasts thermal spas and a few ski resorts. An extraordinary cave in Macedonia, has sparked the interest of some international speleologists, as it appears to date back more than 5 million years and contains unique 'cave pearls' and other formations.
