Destination Cities: The capital city of Congo is Brazzaville, which is situated right on the Congo River, opposite Kinshasa in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Congo. In bygone years it was the capital of French Equatorial Africa which was made up of Middle Congo (now called Congo), Chad, Gabon and the Central African Republic. Today it has been overshadowed by larger, more vibrant cities, but retains a mellow, friendly atmosphere. The main tourist part of Brazzaville is called Plateau, where all the larger hotels, restaurants and best night clubs are located. Other neighbourhoods also offer great dance clubs, restaurants and craft shops. There is a good market in the Bacongo section.
Pointe-Noire is the main port city of the country and also a center for sport fishing. It is the region people go to for a beach holiday. It was the capital city of Middle Congo for a short time in the 1950s. Sites include the J. B. Lamarck Zoo, the Georges Brousseau Museum, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Some of the best beaches can be found here with amenities for boating, fishing, diving and snorkelling.
Points of Interest: While in Brazzaville, you can take a ride down the Congo River Rapids, also known as Les Cataractes du Congo. There are many opportunities for beach activities and fishing in Pointe-Noire. If you venture into the wilderness of the interior, the Odzala National Park in the Congo Basin is one of Africas most unusual ecosystems. Thousands of years of climatic fluctuations have changed this area from rainforest to savannah and back again, resulting in a patchwork of jungle, marsh and grasslands. The diversity of animal and plant life is amazing.
