Destination Cities: Viking settlers spent centuries here, and established local Tings (governments) throughout the islands. Tórshavn, the main town on Tinganes, is a charming and historically rich capital, one of the smallest in the world.
Points of Interest: Walkers and hikers will want to see the crest of Enniberg on the North islands, the highest cliff in Europe, and to climb Slættaratindur, the islands' highest peak, for their views of the sea and the varied topography, which extends even to sand dunes on Sandoy, the least rugged island. Also on Sandoy, trek west from Skopun to the Cliffs of Djúpaberg, or along the cliffs of the south coast to Sandur, situated on a small peninsula between two lakes, Sandsvatn and Gróthúsvatn, and two bays, Sandsvágur and Grótvik. Experienced divers accompany scuba divers; the fishing is both sea fishing and angling for salmon and trout in rivers, streams, and lakes such as the beautiful lakes, Norðara Hálsavatn and Heimara Hálsavatn. The fascinating Sandur Church is on a site has been used as a parish centre since the 11th century.
