Destination Cities: Although the earliest settlements of Nuuk (the capital) date back over 4000 years, the first town was established by a missionary in 1728. The museum at Colonial Harbour is worth a visit as is the ancient Eskimo ruins near Ilismatusarfik. The area around Nuuk offers many opportunities such as trekking Mount Sermitsiaq, whale watching (Humpbacks), fjord boat tours, cruises to Moonstone Island and fishing. The Inuit Arts and Crafts Tour may interest you. Take a trip to the northernmost inhabited region in the world, QaanaqThule. Hunting is very important to the population here. It is the land of the midnight sun (April to mid August) and the arctic nights when there is no sun for 3 months. Ilulissat is a great destination to set your eyes on magnificent icebergs, towering hundreds of meters out of the ocean. The town is situated in the mouth of a fjord. Colourful wooden houses, many seals and abundant fish can all be found at Qasigiannguit. It is also of great importance historically and archaeologically. Ancient remains and relics are on show in the museum giving insight to ancient civilisations. Tundra, valleys and hills surround the town allowing for summer hiking. Lake Taswesuaq is great for canoeing.
Points of Interest: Southern Greenland is home to ruins of the first churches and Viking settlers. The well preserved ruins can be found near to Narsaruaq. Organised excursions can be arranged which also include nature exploration.
