Destination Cities: Guatemala City lures many international tourists with lent and Holy Week festivities. Visit the Civic Theatre, National Palace of Culture and Metropolitan Cathedral. If you're looking for local arts, crafts or souvenirs, pop in at the Handicraft Market. The Zona Viva is an upmarket part of Guatemala City and hub of nightlife activity with restaurants, hotels and bars.
Quetzaltenango is a commercial, colonial town and second largest in Guatemala. San Jacinto, the first church built in Guatemala is situated in this part of the country, as well as Espiritu Santo Cathedral and the Municipal Theatre. Many ecotourism companies offer a variety of activities. On the first Sunday of each month the Central America Park hold
social gatherings and festivities. The Museum of Archaeology, History and Nature may be of interest. The Fuente Georginas (hot springs) are not far off.
The well preserved city of La Antingua has some of the best examples of Spanish Colonial Architecture. Many music concerts and art exhibits are held here. The Mermaid Fountain in the central park has been declared a World heritage Site.
Points of Interest: Tikal National Park holds more than 4000 structures of temples, palaces and remains of dwelling places, scattered amid tropical jungle. Guided tours can be arranged. Monkeys, crocodiles and weasels are amongst the many species of animal who make this park their home. Bird watching here is rewarding.
In the highlands there are many resorts scattered on banks of rivers and lake shores with the natural beauty of cliffs, crater lakes, waterfalls and a host of other scenery.
San Jose is a popular base for the sport fishing fans. There are great beaches and a new hotel here too.
