Destination CitiesDestination Cities: Moroni is the capital of Comores and the main jumping off point for most visitors. The medina of Moroni is exotic and intoxicating - similar to parts of Zanzibar - with ancient narrow streets stuffed full of mosques and tiny shops. The architecture is crumbling but fascinating and beautiful in Indian Ocean Arab style. Good, cheap food in modest surroundings is a special strength of the town. The port is ancient and beautiful and busy with the comings and goings of all small ocean craft. There are several magnificent beaches on Grande Comore, and some international class resorts. Diving is offered at some resorts. The sport fishing is good but expensive.

Anjouan island is the second largest of the Comores, it has majestic beauty but is more heavily populated than the others. This has left its mark. Mutsamudu is the main town, a maze of alleyways, lanes, shops and shabby buildings. There are several Sultans Palaces nearby, most are still occupied, so do not assume they are open for visitors. Hiking is beautiful here with several cross-island routes. There is a ylang-ylang distillery at Bamboa. Though the island is busy, if you explore, you will find many magnificent deserted beaches.

Points of InterestPoints of Interest: Banque Internationale des Comores (BIC) is the only bank which will change travellers cheques.

Dzaoudzi is the deepwater port and the site of the airport of Mayotte - the French Island in the archipelago. Mamoudzou is the capital of the island. Mayotte has a magnificent coral reef and more diving facilities than the Comoran Islands. Boating, fishing and diving is a big thing. It is significantly more expensive than on the Comores. Mayotte is connected to the Comores by sea routes. You may no longer fly between the island and the rest of the Comores, except on international carriers.
