Destination Cities: Pyongyang was destroyed during the Korean War and has been completely rebuilt with broad avenues, carefully designed parks and enormous marble public buildings. See the Palace of Culture, the Grand Theatre, the Juche Tower and the Ongrui Restaurant as examples of Communist architecture, and don't miss the Gates of Pyongyang and the Arch of Triumph (built in honour of Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday. The half a millennium of imperial history of Korea is more visible in Kaesong (six hours from the capital by train), which has many ancient buildings and is surrounded by beautiful pine-clad hills.
Points of Interest: Paekdusan, or "White Head Mountain" on the Korean-Chinese border in the far north, is an extinct volcano of huge significance to North Korean people. Here the Son of the Lord of Heaven came to Earth to establish the first Korean kingdom. At its summit is a huge crater lake called Chonji ('Lake of Heaven'), one of the deepest alpine lakes in the world; also one of the coldest, despite the two hot springs which feed into it. The area is interesting for the revolutionary and anti-imperialist slogans carved into the "slogan-bearing trees. The largest national park is the country is Kumgangsan, the Diamond Mountain range on the east coast.
