Destination Cities: Settled by the Carthaginians and Greeks in antiquity, and successively conquered by the Numidians, the Romans (46 BCE), Vandals, Arabs, even the Knights of Malta and the Turks, Tripolitania is the richest province in Libya and contains Tripoli, anciently known as Oea. Dominated by the Red Castle, Assai al-Hamra, it is still the capital of Libya, despite attempts in recent years to move some parts of the government out of the city. In the oasis town of Ghadhames, 650km (400mi) southwest of Tripoli, one can stay in traditional desert guest houses. Benghazi, on the eastern edge of the Gulf of Sirt, is the second largest city in Libya, and worth visiting for its desert architecture.
Points of Interest: Leptis Magna, the outstanding Roman archaeological site in the Mediterranean, is spectacular in its architecture and of astonishingly massive scale. It was a rich Phoenician port during the first millennium BCE, thanks to its slaves, ivory and precious metals, and its location in rich agricultural lands. Today, oil maintains it in the style to which it has been accustomed for three millennia.
