Destination Cities: Antananarivo is a colonial style city with cobbled stone streets and stairways, nestled on the hillside in the highlands. The botanical gardens and zoo allow the visitor to view exotic flora and fauna, such as the lemur (listen to their unique 'choir'), a skeleton of an extinct bird (known as the 'elephant bird'), birds and chameleons (Madagascar is home to half the world's species of chameleon). Vibrant, daily flower markets are held near Lake Anosy. There are bars, nightclubs and restaurants in "Tana" (as the locals call their capital).
Antsiranana is a magnificent bay city in the north, with a deep harbour circled by jungle covered peaks. Discover the sacred caves and limestone formations as well as the Montagne d'Ambre National Park and Ankarana National Park. Montagne d'Ambre is home to lemurs, fossa, reptiles, birds, mosses, ferns and orchids. Ankarana is the perfect place to adventure into caves housing crocodiles or bats and take in the dramatic landscape. This is the perfect spot to catch a boat to Nosy Be island.
The surrounding area of Ansirabe has two volcanic crater lakes and thermal spas. Spend your time swimming or boating on the Tritriva Lake. This town is also well known for its stone cutting.
Points of Interest: Madagascar has over half a dozen national parks, ranging from rainforests to spiny forests and hosting exotic plant and animal life.
Nosy Be is the most popular holiday destination in Madagascar. It is the island north of Madagascar offering snorkelling, diving and is great for bird watching. Other interesting things to do in Madagascar include butterfly tours, with species unique to this country.
