Destination Cities: Ulaanbaatar not only hosts great monasteries, museums and temples but is the gateway to a number of national parks and with wildlife, monasteries and museums. Terejl, which is the most popular tourist destination is a protected area, home to unique rock formations, forests and grasslands. Activites such as rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding and white water rafting.
Karakorum is the ancient capital dating back to 1220 and Genghis Kahn's legendary city. You may want to view the ruins, Mongolia Erdene Zuu Monastery or Turkish monuments and artefacts of old. Perhaps one of the more interesting finds in recent times in this region has been a tomb. The burial place of a 14th century Mongolian woman with a wooden comb, a bronze mirror in a silk case and 2 Egyptian masks.
Points of Interest: Undor dov, not too far from the capital city, offers an experience with the nomads. You can stay in a ger, go horseback riding and visit the Manzushiri Monastery. The Buddhist ritual of Tsam Mask Dancing takes place in autumn. The Gobi Desert is home to camel breeders and the Great Gobi Reservation - a Biosphere Reserve. It is easiest to reach this destination by air. Khorsgol Lake is great for fishing and bird watching (part of a migratory route for birds). A ferry takes passengers between the cities on the banks of the lake. You may want to visit the extinct volcano of Khargo or the intimidating sand dunes and oases along the Khangurun River. Camel tours operate here. Some of the festivals held in Mongolia include the Ice Festival, Camel Festival, Racing Hoofs International Festival of Music and the Hunting with Eagle Festival.
