Destination Cities: Alofi is the capital. You may stay here or in any of the villages-the island is so small that one day's bike-ride will take you around it.
Points of Interest: Niue is a coral atoll riddled with caves and coves, perfect for exploring and swimming. The water is crystal clear for greater distances than in most other Pacific regions, because there is no soil to wash into the sea when it rains. Scuba diving to see fantastic tropical fish is a favourite activity, and there are many tours of various sorts on the island, which caters very well to visitors. Humpback whales calve here in July and August. Those who fish will catch mahi-mahi, marlin and other big game fish. Above the water are equally beautiful clouds of butterflies by day, and fruit bats by night-a traditional food source. Popular spots to swim and sight-see are headed by the Talava Rock Arches, a natural formation so spectacular that Captain Cook took note of it on his famous voyage. Also beautiful are Togo Chasm, which features a "secret cave" leading out from the island to the offshore reef; Avaiki Cave, used only by kings in the olden days; Avatele Bay, for the best swimming on the island; Limu, Matapa Chasm and Palaka Cave -all good for swimming. The scenic rainforest areas, especially around Hakupu and Kikutavake Hill in the east, are great for walking trips. Tours are available for a nature walk in the Huvalu Conservation Area, and Reef walks and cave tours are all available and make fascinating sight-seeing pastimes.
