Destination Cities: The largest community on Svalbard is Longyearbyen, and one of its main tourist accommodations is the Spitzbergen Hotel but there is a variety of other places to stay, from hotels to hostels. The local population is about 1100 people and just as many snowmobiles. The city is well planned with all the conveniences youd expect to find in a much larger city. It even has a conference center. There is not much in the way of cities outside of Longyearbyen, most excursions will take you to the breathtaking natural sites of the surrounding tundra, ice fields and fjords. Dont forget your camera!
Points of Interest: For many who visit Svalbard, the clear Arctic nights with their sparkling stars are the most impressive. There is midnight sun in April and dramatic aurora borealis (northern lights) year-round. These are caused by interactions between solar winds and the Earths magnetic fields. Nature-watching offers rich rewards, but visitors are warned to be ecologically savvy: leave no litter and avoid picking the wild flowers. You can always take them home on film.
