![]() South America and the Antarctic The world's contemporary continent of mystery, South America is a land of magical realism. Are you a naturalist? The young Charles Darwin came here, cataloguing the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, now a monument to the environmentalist movement. The Amazon River Basin is home to the rarest of tropical flora and fauna. Are you a revolutionary? Simon Bolivar was born here, his heart afire to liberate South Americans in Venezuela, Peru, and Bolivia, named for him. Many a modern pilgrim sees the unforgettable Inca ruins of Peru, inexplicable and awe-inspiring. Few have travelled the source waters of the Amazon, but many cruise its shores in preternatural silence to see the edenic beauty of the (still!) untouched jungle. Many lose themselves in the wild joys of Rio's Mardi Gras, or revel in the 21st-century nightlife of Buenos Aires, Caracas and São Paulo. The great statue of Christ overlooks Rio de Janeiro on the Atlantic, while on the Pacific, hillside villages gaze far out to the stone gods of Easter Island. Cruise ships glide south of Tierra del Fuego to the greatest mystery of all, the gleaming magnificence of the continent of Antarctica, where you can lean over the bow and shout as George Vancouver did on his voyage with Captain Cook, "Ne Plus Ultra!" |
