![]() The Middle East The Middle East is politically divided, yes - but by no means out of bounds for the sensible traveller. Consider these must-see destinations and take opportunities as they arise. Bahrain (see Al Fateh Grand Mosque), Qatar ( the most historic sites are in the north) and the United Arab Emirates, some of the world's wealthiest countries, feature great beaches and fabulous cuisine. Cyprus, half Greek, half Turkish, is a popular winter destination, with Nicosia, the capital, a shopper's heaven with quaint shops. The Old and New Testament coastal countries - Lebanon, Israel, Syria - are breathtaking. Syria's capital, Damascus, is the oldest city in the world, filled with historical treasures. Crac des Chevaliers, built in the Middle Ages by the Crusaders, is a must-see. Latakia is an excellent Mediterranean resort town. |
